An Action type is the overall workflow category (e.g., Violations, Work Orders, ARC Requests, etc.). Each action type belongs to a category that determines available configuration options.
This article guides you through creating a new action type. For more information about action types and how they fit in with action items, see the "Action Item Configuration: Overview" and "Action Category Types" articles.
Note: Action type requirements have been simplified from five options to two. Existing action types automatically migrated to the new structure and continue to function as before.

Create an Action Type
To create a new action type:
- Navigate to Settings > Action Types/Steps.
-
Click New Action Type.
The Create Action Type screen opens.
-
Provide the following information:
- Category: Select the category that best fits this workflow. Categories determine which rules and options are available as well as where the action type is used. For example, the Collections category includes specific fields for statement messages, while the Alerts category includes alert timing options. For more information, see the "Action Category Types" article.
- Action Type: Enter a name for this action type workflow.
- Send To: This field is also known as the Default Followers. Enter the roles that can view, create, and step this action type. Users with roles that are not in this field cannot view, create, or step this action type.
- Administrator Role: Enter roles that can step this action type to any step at any time.
-
Action Type Requirement: Select what information a user must provide before creating an action item:
- Require Association: Requires the user to select an association. The user may also optionally select an individual property within that association.
- Require Property: Requires the user to select both an association and a specific property.
- Block Creation: Select to prevent users from manually creating this action type. Use this setting for action types that should only be created automatically by the system.
- Enable No Email Alerts: Select to prevent automatic notifications when email delivery fails due to missing recipient email addresses (disabled by default).
-
Click Save.
Tip: After saving, your new action type appears in the table. Once you add steps, click XN Lab on the action type row to view a visual diagram of the complete workflow. For more information, see the "XN Lab" article.
